Sims Metal Management is the world’s leading publicly-listed metal recycler with operations encompassing the buying, processing and selling of ferrous and non-ferrous recycled metals. The metals recycling operations are geographically diverse comprising a network of processing facilities with deep-water port access, supported by an extensive network of feeder yards to source recyclable ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Monterey Mechanical provides routine daily maintenance services as well as 24/7 emergency response to equipment shutdowns. This includes keeping the 5,000 horsepower shredders in service around the clock, as well as the conveyors and shuttle car that loads the incoming ships.
Monterey Mechanical. was instrumental in setting up Sims’ shredding operation at Apple. Equipment was installed at the Apple facility in a high security area to shred top secret R&D projects. All MMC personnel had to pass strict background to enter the facility.
Challenges | Solutions
With safety the number one concern on projects, Monterey Mechanical staff noticed dust particles in the work area at one of the Sims’ facilities. We followed standard safety protocols and the reported the concern, which went up the chain of command for immediate resolution. Monterey Mechanical communicated in writing with Sims to determine if testing had been conducted on the dust. Sims sent reports to Monterey Mechanical and the two firms determined that all workers and visitors needed wear half-masks to protect themselves from the contaminated dust. A safety alert was implemented immediately avoiding a potential health hazard.
