Delivery Method: Design-Build

Result and Benefit to Client

Monterey Mechanical delivered an award-winning design-build project to the City of Stockton on schedule and within budget.

Project Description

The City of Stockton’s Delta Water Supply Project integrated the City’s surface water and groundwater management efforts to develop a new supplemental water supply for the Stockton metropolitan area.

The project included a new 30 MGD water treatment plant and more than 12 miles of raw water pipeline. CDM Constructors was the prime contractor for this design-build project.

Monterey Mechanical also provided constructability reviews and value engineering services. As design documents became refined, we competitively bid trades packages and were awarded a core subcontract to perform structural concrete, above-ground mechanical piping, process equipment installation, fabrication/installation of miscellaneous metals and structural steel, and HVAC.

Challenges | Solutions

Because construction activities commenced before 100%-design documents were complete, Monterey Mechanical implemented a stringent document control system. This system ensured that the most current design documents were available and used for construction operations to eliminate rework.

The guaranteed maximum price (GMP) was established prior to 100% design. Monterey Mechanical was retained for constructability reviews and value engineering. We were able to use value engineering and creative cost-saving solutions during design to offset the cost increases of the final design.
