Sunnyvale Materials Recovery and Transfer Station (SMaRT Station)

Location: Sunnyvale, CA

Owner: City of Sunnyvale

Contract: $13.8 Million

Role: General Contractor

Delivery Method: Design-Build

Result and Benefit to Client

A quality project was delivered safely and on time with limited service operations during construction. Monterey Mechanical’s proactive decision to source more-efficient trommels will shave costs off the City of Sunnyvale electricity bill for many years.

Sustainable Aspect

The completed project successfully reduced the number of disposal trucks going to a landfill each day from 150 to 30.

Project Description

The new SMaRT station was construction to accept garbage and recycling materials from residents and businesses in Sunnyvale, Mountain View, and Palo Alto.

Under a design-build contract, Monterey Mechanical was responsible for design, permitting, supply and installation of new processing equipment and related structural work.

The project included structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical design and construction of two sorting platform enclosures.

Challenges | Solutions

Because all work was performed at an operating recycling facility, limited interruptions to service were permitted. Monterey Mechanical dramatically reduced the impact on operations by accelerating the design approval process for structural modifications. This allowed work to be performed during non-revenue periods and minimized operational impacts.

Instead of accepting the trommels originally planned, Monterey Mechanical proactively vetted manufacturers to locate trommels that were more effective and energy efficient. This change in trommel manufacturers will provide the City annual energy cost savings for many years to come.
